Cihangir Gümüstürkmen is a visual and performance artist based in Berlin, Germany. Born in the Turkish city of Izmir, he started to draw, paint and dance very early. Following his interests in the visual arts, Cihangir became known to a wider public with Transformation in 1993, a series of paintings of drag queens.
In 1999 he presented PUMPS 2000, a unique series of shoe sculptures made of diverse materials such as ceramics, sheet metal, lace, beads, Lego bricks and pasta. In 2005 the artist explored the limits of the colour black in contrast to metal structures with his series Noire.
In 1996 Cihangir and Fatma Souad founded Berlin's legendary cabaret Salon Oriental. They both played supporting roles in Kutluğ Ataman's acclaimed film Lola & Bilidikit in 1999. Cihangir presented One Görl Show, his first solo comedy show, in 2003.
Cihangir’s Black Bird, the artist's first music CD was released in 2005 followed by a dance DVD in 2006.
In 2006 Cihangir Gümüstürkmen created the cartoon series, Lale Lokum & Fatma Souad, which had been published in Tanz Oriental magazine. He also wrote articles on the history of Oriental Dance.
Cihangir played in Nurkan Erpulat's production of FAKE – gefälschte Identitäten (faked identities) at Hebbel am Ufer theatre in Berlin in 2007.
In 2010 the artist worked with photos creating collages and presenting them in lightboxes as part of the group exhibition ALIEN IN MY SPACE.
Cihangir Gümüstürkmen organized Salon Istanbul, a series of cultural events in Berlin in 2010 and 2011.
