The art works of the artist Cihangir Gümüştürkmen, born in Izmir 1964, resident of Berlin since 1977, consist of a variety of different works from paintings and sculptures to photo, video and performance pieces. Whether in his vibrantly coloured collages, reminiscent of Pop Art, his traditional mirror images , or in his works, hyperrealist oil-paintings, Gümüştürkmen expresses himself freely across all artistic periods and disciplines. Not only as an artist, but also as a performer Cihangir Gümüştürkmen maneuvers elegantly between the cultures that have impacted his life. Using motifs Gümüştürkmen combines memories of his childhood and cultural background with his life today. This creates enthralling and surreal imagery, that breaks multiple conventions, posing critical questions. Cihangir Gümüştürkmen plays with traditional ways of seeing things and calls, for example, current gender norms into question. Central to all of his works is a permanent and often ironic self-reflection.
